I have 7 older hens given to me by a neighbor about a year ago and just ordered 10 new chicks. Originally the chicks were supposed to ship after April 5th when we get back from vacation, but there was a mix up and they shipped yesterday. We leave at the end of March for 6 days. The chicks will only be 3 weeks old and I am very concerned about leaving them alone for a week. They will be kept in a separate coop placed in a barn. We may be able to get a neighbor to check on them, but will that be enough? Any suggestions?
 
I really think that is too much responsibility for a neighbor to handle. Chicks are very fragile young, and can get themselves in all sorts of trouble - some may even be flying by then. Unless you have a neighbor that has chickens I would not leave them. I know it's easy for me to say, I don't take trips or vacations, but animals would win out.
 
Very sadly all 10 chicks died during shipping. I picked the box up this morning, first thing. Poor little girls were already stiff. I feel horrible.

So sorry about the chicks not making it to you alive. I hope you've contacted the hatchery (or whoever sent them) and told them what happened. You should be able to get a refund or credit.

Again, sorry about your loss.
 
Yes, I did. They responded immediately with an apology. They are reshipping after April 5th. I live in a small town and the post mistress said she's never had a whole box show up dead. Thank you for your support.

I'm still confused on where to post a question. I got the new batch today, only 3 made it alive and 2 were barely moving, but we are nursing them back as best we can. My question has to do with feeding. The guy at the feed store sold us 'chick to hen' food and said it would work for new babies. But I'm wondering if this is correct?
