I've been searching but haven't really found much info. What does it take to get lavender mottled orpingtons? I have english lavender Orpingtons. Do you have to breed the lavenders to black mottled and breed the offspring back to lavender to get some mottled chicks?

Are the genetics sex linked? Cross the offspring back to the lavender or the black mottled? Or cross the offspring of the lavender and black mottled to each other?

Nope, not sexlinked. Both Mottled and Lavender are recessive, which means they need a copy from each parent for it to "show". You crossthe offspring to each other because the offspring each have 1 copy of Mottled and Lavender.

Parents:
Black Mottled (LAV/LAV mo/mo) x Lavender (lav/lav MO/MO)

F1:
Black Split to Mottled and Lavender (LAV/lav MO/mo) x to sibling with same genes

The F2 offspring will be Black, Black Mottled, Lavender, and Lavender Mottled (lav/lav mo/mo).

Gears are turning now. If I had a lavender mottled rooster over some black hens would it work the same as lavender over black hens? The F1 would be all black. Breed that back to the lavender mottled to get 50/50 black split and lavender mottled? What would lavender mottled bred to lavender do? Would you get some lavender and some lavender mottled?

Here's the best chicken genetics calculator. It's a huge URL.

You first scenario would result in Black, Black Mottled, Lavender, and Lavender Mottled. The second scenario would result in solid Lavender split to Mottled (lav/lav Mo/mo).

Your gears are turning in the correct directions.

mottled lavender bred to lavender would produce all lavenders split for mottle.

It is mottled lavender bred to lavender split for mottle that would give you some lavender some mottled lavender.

Thanks for the reply Kev.

So a mottled lavender rooster over lavender hens would make the chicks lavender split for mottled, and if I breed the females back to the lavender mottled rooster I will end up with half mottled lavender and half lavender right?

Then to get better type I could breed the mottled lavender to black and get all black chicks split for mottled lavender, and breed those back to mottled lavender to get half mottled lavender and half black splits? Or would the ratio be different?

I tried looking at the calculator, but I think it'll take a bit before I get the handle on it. There were a lot of variables.
