I might have 2 chicks in the next 24 - 48hrs and I want to be setting up a small brooder ...

What is the best heat source ?

We started off with the typical red warming lamp on a dimmer switch so we had better control over intensity/temperature. Safety issues aside, it just seemed incredibly unnatural and overly obtrusive to the rest of my flock (we brood right in the coop so everyone gets to know each other from day 0...seems to make for a more peaceable merging).

After switching to the warmer plate (this one to be exact), we never looked back and every time we break it out we commend ourselves on money well spent. It's very natural, gets them on a normal day/night cycle right out of the egg and has an exponentially lower chance of burning the coop down. The cover is highly recommended if you go that route to keep the top clean. Bonus, it also acts as a fun chicken-slide when they start hopping around.
