I've been checking out this site for quite a while and have just got my first chicks and have some serious issues. Monday I bought 6 RIR from a feed store near my work. I didn't really notice the chicks the employee was grabbing, he did it so fast. I had everything ready at home. 4ft tote, pine shavings, heat lamp set at 95... Well I get the chicks home, it was a 40 min drive and I had the heat going in the truck so they wouldn't get cold, I open the box and two come right out looking fine, #3 is a little slower, #4 is very sluggish, #5 and #6 aren't walking at all, they are just sleeping. Within a few hours #5 and #6 had died. By the morning #4 had died. Then Wednesday #3 died. #1 and #2 are doing just fine.
Well Wednesday Murdoch's got some new chicks in and I picked up three NH Reds and three Gold Laced Wyandottes. I get them home and they've been great, no issues, very active, eating and drinking... I'm wondering what happened with the RIR's. Did the Feed store just have sick chicks? They actually had another cage of Buffs that I asked about and they told me they weren't selling them because they got too cold the night before and were worrying they might die. I wonder if that's what happened to their Reds also. #1 and #2 are still doing fine. I guessing they were a little stronger.
