So about a month ago, at a reptile show, a friend gave me advice on a species of feeder rat that wasn't doing the greatest for me...and that's actually how I got started in chickens. I was told to feed it chicken feed...my girlfriends immediate response was "so we can get chickens now!". I said no. Well we have a 10x10 dog pen and the g/f brought up the idea again of getting a few RIR's for egg laying, we eat a lot of eggs and she loves fresh eggs a lot better than store bought...so I said sure, we can get a few hens to lay eggs, I can use the no longer needed dog pen (it was for a stray we took in that didn't need it any longer after about a week) and build a coop. Well I like variety, so I wanted to add something else, we went to a local breeder and picked up a buff orpington, two barred rocks and two EE's...they didn't have RIR's. So we go to an animal auction, ended up getting a trio of d'uccle millie fleur, 1.3 group of bantam millie fleur...and still no RIR's. We eventually end up at another breeder a week or so later, finally get the girlfriend her 3 RIR's that she wanted...along with two more EE's and three gold laced wyandottes. So since the RIR's were all we were really supposedly trying to find all along, the others don't count right? Chicken math...yeah, didn't take long...lol. Chicken math is about to have to take a back seat to space though, I can't free range so whatever I have will be either in the big pen/coop which will be for all the egg laying hens, or a couple of chicken tractors that I can see I'm going to have to get built, and then we'll basically be full...unless something else goes to make room, or I keep building more tractors.

My history is full of a variety of animals having fostered many of the local wildlife species here in middle tennessee, If I have something I "specialize in" it would be snakes, I have a hobby breeding them which I have done since the early 90's, currently I have a little over a hundred made up of about fifteen different species (guessing, not counting..lol). I also have kept a couple of the smaller exotic cats, a serval and a caracal, have bred parakeets and cockatiels, and also still have a ring tailed lemur.

I'm also in the facebook group, which is most likely where I'll be more active at, but I'm just here looking at a lot of great idea's, enjoying the pics and learning what I can from the rest of you!

Cheers!
Charlie
