Hello everyone! My name is Natasha and I am a wife of one and a mother of two growing kids! I am a Personal Fitness coach and Owner of my own health and wellness business. I am from Northern Va. My hobbies are reading, singing, gardening and spending as much time outside as I can. I am new to having chickens! My husband is in the final stages of making our coop and run! We have not decided on what breed to get yet. We live in Northern Va with two kids, two dogs, and some land. We are adding chickens into our family for eggs, growth and experience for our kids and because I have always wanted chickens! As a new Chicken mom I would love advice all and any!

Very nice to meet you Natasha - Welcome to the Backyard chickens flock. The Learning Center is the very best place to start your chicken education. You may also want to check out the Coops section, for ideas, styles, functions. Rule of thumb is to allow 4-5 sq. feet per bird in the coop - not including roosts and nest boxes. In the outdoor run they need 10 sq. feet per bird. great option is a solid run cover, to protect somewhat from the elements, keep climbers and raptors OUT, and keep chickens inside and safe.

Hi Natasha and welcome to BYC. You may wish to search the breeds section here and create a shortlist of breeds. The greater the variety of breeds you get now, the sooner you will know what breed suits you and your conditions best.

Good luck!

Hi Natasha, you might like to pop in to your state thread and see what other members in your area like for breeds, tips for dealing with weather issues, farm swaps, etc. Just type your state name in the Search box and your state thread should pop up.

It's nice to have you here!
