Thanks for all the feedback and warm welcomes!
I looked at Buff Orpington's but was concerned that they may not lay enough eggs for our family. We eat a lot of eggs. Like 24 a week, easily. I was thinking of only having 4 or 5 birds. That's why I was looking at the Rhode Island Reds because apparently, they are excellent layers and tend to not go broody. I was only planning on having one breed of chicken. Figured less issue of them getting along that way(?) From what I read, BO's lay about 3-4 eggs/week or about 175-200/year whereas RIR lay 5-7/week or 223-312/yr? I'm sure that all depends too on their age, health etc.
Apparently the Costco coops are sub par? So perhaps I need to re evaluate that. I haven't had time to pull it out of the box or examine it too closely. I was thinking of having an additional movable run that I could let them in different part of the yard, and/or adding on to the run it came with.
I will continue my research!
