Hello, all! I am the proud owner of six silkie chickens. I have five hens and one rooster. They are all very friendly and I love them all very much, but I have run into a bad problem. It has been seeming as if nobody's been laying any eggs, but I've been finding a few pieces of eggshell fragments around the coop with no egg yolk. I am now certain that some eggs are being eaten. I recently just found the culprit... One of my hens had sticky yolk all over her beak. I love her very much and I am really hoping for some good advice on how to stop this dangerous habit. Thank you so much!

^^Sorry! I think I posted in the wrong category, but I am new, so I don't know how to use this very well :)

The eggs are ok for the chickens, but a way you can make them stop doing that I found is you take the one inside that eats the eggs and take the eggs away immediately when they lay it. It works for me most of the time.

Hi and welcome to BYC - not to worry about where you post, we'll find it. I'd suggest typing something like "egg eating" in the search box and seeing what comes up.

All the best

Thank you so much! I did this and found good results. I blew the insides of some eggs out and filled it with mustard, which is apparently one of the common solutions for this problem. I found this on another post and I'm hoping it will work. Thank you so much!

Sorry! Like I said, I'm quite new to this so I'm not very good.:) I put a reply above. Thanks again!

I already tried what you suggested, but I can't seem to get to the eggs fast enough. Apparently a good solution to this problem is to fill the eggs with mustard after emptying them out. The chickens really don't like the mustard, so whenever they peck the eggs and eat them, they get a gross taste. As a result, eventually they stop eating the eggs. I hope this works! Thank you for your advice. :)

Hope you can break your egg-eater. That kind of habit can spread to the other chickens once they see one of them enjoying a "treat".

Good luck!
