Back story. We (my sister) found milderd stray possibly backyard release, back in October. We were never able to find her home so we finally built our coop, and she became our first hen. She has always had these bare spots on both sides of her neck. She has not molted for us so either she was under 18months this winter or we found her after her molt. Part of the skin on both sides looks like there are no feathers at all, I'm actually wondering if that part is normal. The rest of the bare skin has pin stubs, and bare feathers like perhaps they were damaged during her stray time, is it likely this area will fill back in properly after she goes through her next molt?

Thank you that's what I was thinking. But my husband wanted some reassurance. He asked me about it the other day and I told him out should look better after she molts.

It is sort of warm here is September/ October a normal time to molt? Or is it more likely she was in her first year when we got her?

not all chickens molt on a strict schedule, some will do it in the fall or early spring, some will do it other time of the year she will do it when she wants to, about how many eggs a week does she lay?

well she is at least a year old maybe 2 max so my guess is about 10-20 months old, my girls were hatched last may 10th or so and they are giving me about 6-7 eggs a week so still really good but there are a couple weeks where it is maybe 4-5, so since mine are about 10 mo. I would say she is probably 15 mo. old and she was born that perfect time of the year where she was too young to molt this last fall but old enough that she will molt this coming fall, and it is funny but she could be a twin to my arrow.

Good to know. I know it's hard to tell age once they are over a year and becuase she was already laying when we found her there's just no saying. The first few weeks she was fully content to making a nest on the ground, but once we built the nesting boxes you'd think she was in heaven. She's always been a very sweet chicken. Let's me pick her up even jumps on my husband's lap

So come to think of it you might be right she might only be in her second year. She was laying 3-4 in a row before winter. Laid the full winter though usually only 1 at a time. And now lays just about even with 2 of my other medium layers weigh also lay 2-3 at a time
