Hello, everyone! I'm very excited to join and am so sad my first post is a worrisome one but I want to make sure our chicks are okay. We purchased our first 6 chicks and 2 ducklings. The ducklings are doing great. The chicks seem fine too, but today I noticed that three of them have a crusty, patchy belly/underside. Even with hanging the water they seem to always spill it. I clean the brooder out one, sometimes twice, a day. What could be causing the irritation? Is the brooder too wet when they decide to take a dip?

:welcome So glad you joined our flock! Make sure that the chicks aren't picking on each other and that the ducks aren't bothering them. I wouldn't let them get into the water at all. Strap it to the wall if you have to, chilling can kill them. Can you post a picture of their undersides? It may also be pasty butt if it is near their vent or they seem constipated. Molasses in their water can act as a laxative for them if so. Hoping your chicks improve! Good luck!

Leaf
