Hi all.

My name is Jason. I had been considering raising chickens for a few years now. I just purchased my first "flock" consisting of rhode island reds, isa browns and a couple of silkies from my local TSC. The chicks are only a week or so old and really active. My daughters are all excited to help with raising them.... (though they have made it very clear that i am not allowed to eat them lol)
i have found a lot of useful info here so far and will share my experience with our new hobby as things progress. First thing second though.. i have chicks, in a decent size create at the moment in a spare room in the house (im in ny so the weather is ify at the moment). now its time to start building a coop for them!

Hi Jason,

Yep, time to build a coop...those little chicks don't stay little long. The Coops tab has a lot of various types and sizes of coops if you need some ideas. And the Coop/Run forum is a good place for asking questions or posting progress pictures of your build.

Good luck, have fun!

Im starting to gather parts for a coop now. Recycling wood from my old barn and a small collection of 2x4s and 2x6s and 4x4s that i have laying around. I have a very small budget to work with so some diy ideas that i have found here are a savior.

I hear you on that! Recycling anything/everything is a great way to go. Don't forget to find out if you can get some free wooden pallets like from a hardware store or maybe Home Depot. They can make good run doors or be taken apart and used for boards.

Hi and welcome to BYC Jason. As well as the Coop section, you may find the Learning Centre to be a great resource loads of info on anything chicken. https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center

Joining your state thread will put you in touch with other BYC members in your area, which can be helpful (just type the name of your state in the search box).

All the best
