Hello everyone my name is Travis but everyone just calls me Kit. I am a new member here and before I introduce myself I would like to take a moment to thank the BYC staff for their kind help. I am glad to have found a place with such friendly and helpful staff as I was having an issue with registration and they took care of it in a quick, friendly and welcoming manner.

I may be new to the site but I am not new to raising animals but it has been quite some time since I have had interaction with chickens. I grew up spending a few hours every day after school and most weekends with my grandparents who were farmers. Most farming was done for meat and egg production so there were cows, pigs, goats and chickens. However this venture into chicken raising will be a bit different as it will be my parents, my wife and myself and none of us really have the experience that my grandparents have.

A few weeks ago my mother told me that she too wanted to get into chickens so for an introduction we got a dozen chicks from the feed store and all of the necessary items to raise them for a few weeks. As I am away from home and not avalibale for a few weeks my father is building a coop for my mothers chickens. She wanted a mix so we went with six Rhode Island Reds and six Australorps and for some reason we have a Barred Rock which I have no idea where my mother got. We also decided to pick up half a dozen Pekins and half a dozen Cayugas.

That being said, once I am home I want to setup my own coop and birds as well. I am looking into getting two dozen Silver Laced Wyandottes. For some reason I just instantly fell in love with them.

Well, I never really know what to say in these sections so that is about all I have to add for now. But I will add a picture of the chicks, just because.

The reds are a week older than the Australorps.

The ducks sure have gotten big in a few weeks time.

Well, there they are. I look forward to chatting with and learning from everyone! Thank you for having me.

Welcome to BYC!

It looks like the Reds really like to snuggle up to the ducks!

Yes they do, we got the reds and the ducks at the same time. When we take them out to the yard and put them in their makeshift playpen the chicks follow the ducks everywhere!

Thank you for the welcome!

Hi Kit and welcome to BYC -great introduction!

The Learning Centre is a great resource, even for experienced chicken / duck keepers - loads of info on anything chicken / duck. https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center

The Coops section may also give you some inspiration for your build.

Joining your state thread will put you in touch with other BYC members in your area, which can be helpful (just type the name of your state in the search box).

All the best

Thank you so much for the advice. I did not even know there was a state thread! As for the coops, I am getting ideas from the share your coop pictures thread. I am on page 109 out of nearly 1200 pages. I keep incorporating things from other coops that I find nice and or utilitarian!

You are welcome. I agree, the variety of coop designs can be a little overwhelming. Personally, I'm a garden shed for a coop kinda fella, but I'm sure you narrow down your options eventually!

Good luck

I was looking at some raised coop ideas for my design but my dad thinks more along the lines you do. He is building my mother an 8x8x8 shed with an 8x16 run. I should think a dozen chickens will be comfy in such a home.

What your dad is doing will fit the bill perfectly. The "standard" size suggestions are 4sq ft per bird in the coop, and 10 sq ft per bird in a run. But remember - chick maths has a way of getting its own way, so the bigger you can build, the better!

Hah, I know what you mean. We started off wanting a dozen but I want two dozen of my own and when I get them I am sure that my mother will want more. Chicks seem to multiply even if you don't let the hens breed!
