Hello everyone my name is Travis but everyone just calls me Kit. I am a new member here and before I introduce myself I would like to take a moment to thank the BYC staff for their kind help. I am glad to have found a place with such friendly and helpful staff as I was having an issue with registration and they took care of it in a quick, friendly and welcoming manner.
I may be new to the site but I am not new to raising animals but it has been quite some time since I have had interaction with chickens. I grew up spending a few hours every day after school and most weekends with my grandparents who were farmers. Most farming was done for meat and egg production so there were cows, pigs, goats and chickens. However this venture into chicken raising will be a bit different as it will be my parents, my wife and myself and none of us really have the experience that my grandparents have.
A few weeks ago my mother told me that she too wanted to get into chickens so for an introduction we got a dozen chicks from the feed store and all of the necessary items to raise them for a few weeks. As I am away from home and not avalibale for a few weeks my father is building a coop for my mothers chickens. She wanted a mix so we went with six Rhode Island Reds and six Australorps and for some reason we have a Barred Rock which I have no idea where my mother got. We also decided to pick up half a dozen Pekins and half a dozen Cayugas.
That being said, once I am home I want to setup my own coop and birds as well. I am looking into getting two dozen Silver Laced Wyandottes. For some reason I just instantly fell in love with them.
Well, I never really know what to say in these sections so that is about all I have to add for now. But I will add a picture of the chicks, just because.
The reds are a week older than the Australorps.
The ducks sure have gotten big in a few weeks time.
