Hello today my one hen was acting extremely different she wasn't jumpy she wasn't leaving her nest in the sand to much she was squatting her butt and so I stuck her in the house and she won't use the nesting boxes and she unusually digs a hole in the sand under the nesting boxes and goes and lays her egg there and she still does but today she was in the sand and I put her in the nesting box and she laid her eggs there but she will usually hop back down and lay her egg in the sand and she finally did lay her egg and it was soft shelled and her Vent looks as if she was egg bound and she won't get off the nest in the sand and acting like she is trying to lay another egg but I put an old sock on my hand and I didn't feel any egg so I knew she couldn't lay another egg right after she laid one but why is she acting like this she is not broody. She was perfectly heathy that morning but then that after noon when she usually lays her egg I knew something was different. And I know it was her that laid that egg because I watched it fall out of her when I was scooping poo a
Out of the sand like I do every day. So what should I look out for and she is drinking I haven't seen her eat and she was standing in the water bowl like she didn't even know it was there she is holds her feathers out away from her vent like they do when they lay an egg but she already layer one. Any help is greatly appreciated thanks

What breed is she?, most egg laying breeds do get egg bound sometimes. Do you give them any calcium supplement in their feed to help with shell making?

She is americaun mixed with all sorts of stuff she is on layer feed and none of the others lay soft shelled and they lay everyday and her egg yesterday wasn't soft at all so could this be a one time thing or what and I know she isn't egg bound I have an egg bound hen now she has been egg bound for a few months now ey egg u can still feel inside of her so I know what to look for they only thing she is showing is the red looking vent like my other hen did and she is acting nothin like the other hen

And yes that egg bound hen is still alive today I almost thought she was going to die as skinny as she was and not eating and drinking for about a week she finally started eating a little after her Beth's in warm water and she eventually went compleytley back to normal at first for a month she didn't poo right and I had to clean the poo off her but but now she lays pretend eggs like she misses laying eggs

Well she was perfectly fine this morning just this after noon when she had to lay her egg like any other day just she is still acting like she had to lay an egg I put her outside and she just stands there I am afraid she is trying to lay another egg and going to end up pooping out something that shouldn't come out of her body

Oh no, maybe put her in a place where it's dark. It will take away some stress, or just see what she looks like tomorrow. Some of my birds have pulled through overnight, and acted like nothing happened.

Ok I will let u know how she is tomarrow there was like a clear slop running out of her vent like my other hen laid a soft shelled egg a while ago and my other chicken was eating it it's not doing it now though
