Pressing the little thumbs up button on the corner of a post is how to give an ovation and people normally give it to you if they find your post helpful.
 
This is a fairly easy question. The ovations are something people that read your posts can give when they like something they have read. You can give ovations by clicking on the thumbs up in the post you like. You can also write a comment to the person that posted what you are giving an ovation for. They will be the only one that can read what you have written in the comment.
You can read what others have commented for you by clicking on the ovations word in your profile.

I see others have posted responses and know this is probably info they have already shared.

Ovations are a good thing. You can't give yourself any and there is a daily limit I think of how many you can give out. But there is always another day, if you use them up.
 
My understanding is that every member begins with 10 ovations, the rest is down to your wisdom or wit
