Shilohdi

In the Brooder
Hi, I'm Dianne. I have Shiloh Shepherd dogs, hence the call name "Shiloh Di". I kept meat birds two years ago and loved having the chickens. It was a learning year. I do not currently have any chickens, but I am ordering meat birds and layers for later this spring. I recently graduated with my B.Sc. in Food and Nutrition and am in the process of acquiring my Registered Dietitian designation. I have a passion for good, fresh, local food. I have a 17-year-old daughter, who has special needs. She has been insisting on getting pet chickens. A friend offered me two older laying hens that were slated to be culled from the flock. I thought my daughter would be excited. Nope!!! She wants hens that lay eggs!!! So the two of us are embarking on our latest adventure by acquiring laying hens and modifying our coop to house both types of birds. I came across Backyard Chickens two years ago when I started researching keeping meat birds. I know I will be reading the information here thoroughly because there is a long list of what I don't know about chickens!

Nice to meet you Diane. You've got questions and the Learning Center has tons of answers. There is also "Canadians- check-in-here," thread that may have what you want nearby.

Hi Dianne, drumstick diva has given you a couple of really good places to check out so I'll just say hi and it's nice to have you join us!

Hi Diane and kudos to your daughter for encouraging the age old issue of chicken maths

Theres lots of resources here (e.g. the Learning Centre, searches for topics) - i understand that you have some experience, but you may still find some articles useful.

All the best

To be honest, in this case it's been my daughter giving me the push I needed. Now that I have a plan in development, I'm very excited about having chickens again. I've already found the Learning Centre and info about breeds to be very helpful, not to mention all the great ideas for coops, laying boxes and waterers.

Good to read that between your daughter and B Y C you have found your chicken keeping mojo :)

Best wishes
