In the Brooder
Hey there,
I have recently found a bantam rooster wandering around my neighbourhood and after ringing the vets, putting posters and ad's up for a lost rooster, having no reply we have decided to keep him as he is very pretty, friendly, small and only crows at 8-9 instead of 5-7.
We have had chickens before in flocks of maybe 3-6 but only hens, this is our first time of having a rooster.
The thing is that he is his own flock of 1 and much prefers trying to get inside to us for company instead of doing what normal chickens do ( scratching for food in the backyard, having dirt baths etc.)
He loves nothing more than sitting on our laps and being cuddled but I fear he will be very lonely when the holidays finish and we are not here during the day.
So I was thinking of getting a hen for company for him.
Now I know all about chicken maths and how 10 hens to one chicken is the right amount but I thought that because he is quite small and friendly he couldn't do much harm.
Obviously if he was a larger, more crow-ey , testosterone filled rooster I wouldn't put him with only one hen but in this case I think he is gentle enough to have only 1 or 2 companions.
I was thinking maybe a silky or frizzle due to their size (he's about the size of a silky if not a bit bigger)
But yeah I just wanted to share to hear your opinions
Cheers
