Agreed. If all you want is eggs, then there is nothing wrong with hatchery stock.

There is something seriously wrong with the chicks you have though. I cannot imagine what he has done to create such awful birth defects. I am sorry you have to deal with this.
 
I can only imagine how that came to be. "Gosh, when I bought this place it was dirt cheap. Great place for chickens, they can water at that pond with the barrels in it out back. It never freezes over, don't even need any lights, that little pond glows in the dark."
 
I inspected each one as we loaded them tonight. Two are bad, though the pics actually make them look worse than they are. Two are curved to one side. One miiiight be straight. And guess who's perfect? The one winged wonder. :-/ Of course.

Settled their small coop into my barn and made their feed into mash. They *attacked* it. I'm so angry with this man. There are no words.

A breeder would have culled the line. A breeder would have culled a chick missing a wing.There is nothing salvageable there.
