Hey guys, there has been a fox that has been wandering around our yard for the past couple of days and I am worried about my hen's safety. Does anyone know anything that foxes don't like that I could put around the coop? Like, something that I would have lying around?

Are your chickens in a secure coop and run? If so, I would think the fox would get discouraged and move on eventually. I'd watch its behavior, though. If it's acting strangely, wandering around in circles or seeming unusually tame, call whoever you are supposed to call for animal control and have them come take care of it, it could have rabies. (A fox merely coming to visit during the day doesn't alarm me, but they can get rabies, and are carriers in certain parts of the country.) I live in the country, and a fox coming into our building site would likely be eradicated.

I think it is pretty secure. There is one spot where there is no chicken wire that I am concerned about, but nothing has gotten through that spot since we put them out there last summer. I have only gotten little glimpses of the fox. I live in a more suburban area so they aren't to common but do pop up every once in a while. I saw one on Wednesday in the middle of our yard staring at the chicken coop, so I opened the door and screamed at it and it ran off.

I saw one today in a creek that had a squirrel in its mouth, it ran off immediately. We just haven't seen a fox so frequently in our neighborhood so it is a little frightening. We are thinking of renovating the coop in the summer but we can't right now due to busy scheduling. So I am hoping our chickens will be okay until then.

Prolly not a fox but many Fox. And chicken wire won't keep Fox from getting to your chickens they'll tear right through. Check at night for packs. I thought I had a Fox problem but after I started looking I had a 6-8 Fox problem. I ended up putting an electric fence up to keep them away. My pens were 2x4 welded wire and they got through that

Is there anything I can do tonight or tomorrow to keep the fox from getting through?

Now I am really worried about them.

Again, I live in a suburban area where shooting foxes don't go down well and I don't own a gun.

Right - so again, maybe contact animal control or whoever you call for such things. You may want to think about finding the time to beef up your coop if all you have is chicken wire. That holds them in, but doesn't do much good to keep things out. Electric wire is quite helpful.
