My coop is an 'envelope' of 1/2" Hardware Cloth.....all openings in the shed it is in are covered in HC also.
My run is roofed and aproned in 2x4 welded wire......
.....soon to be lined with HC for tiny chicks and deep litter containment(sure am going to miss the chooks keeping all vegetation away from run walls).
I chose this for financial reason and the fact that hawks are my biggest threat and I am home 95% of the time to take care of any other threats.
I'm rural, close to woods, but yard is fenced with dog inside.
It really depends on where you live, what the predator load is, and what risks you're prepared to undertake.
