Hi, was just wondering if 2 week old chicks can squeeze through the holes in chicken wire? Do they try to escape? What is too big a space for them at 2 weeks old? I want to put them in a space that is about 10x10 feet. I have 21 chicks. I will put the heat lamp in one corner for them. Enclosed draft free space. Temps will be in the mid to high 40's at night. Is this ok?

They won't be able to squeeze through one-inch poultry mesh, but Inch and a half is possible. A worse danger than chicks escaping is that they will poke their head through the poultry mesh, all sizes, and can be decapitated or yanked through by an animal or even a chicken on the outside. You need hardware cloth around the bottom to assure their safety.

As for the temps, they can handle temps down below freezing just fine as long as they have a dependable heat source to warm up under.

You can read about outdoor brooding in an article I wrote on the subject, linked below under "Articles".
