I noticed 3 out of 12 chics are starting to walk funny, like unsteady, and their feet are curling under them. What is wrong. They are not as lively as they were. Help! And how old do they halfto be before I can let them run on the ground in the coop

Quote: They can be of any age, as long as the young ones are taken inside at dark and the coop is suited to their size and age.

May be they are sick or maybe just need more nutrients, last year I had some chciks that were having trouble standing and walking. I thought they were sick so I culled some of them. Then I read that lack of vitamins will cause them to have trouble walking. They feet and legs would curl up or extend forward as if they were cramping. I bought some Poly-Vi-Sol a liquid vitamins from Walmart and gave them a little bit orally, the next day they were fine. So now,I gave some of this vitamins in their water. Good luck with your chicks. You can search Poly-Vi-Sol in this board and read about it.

I always check the manufactured date on the feed bag, and buy only three week old or newer bags. Some vitamins go away rapidly, and sometimes the feed sits at the store for months! Mary

If it is a vitamin deficiency and extra vitamins help, look hard at your feed! A chick might have genetic issues and need much more than others of some nutrient, but the whole group is unlikely to have the same problem. If necessary, have chilled dead birds posted at your state lab, and get answers. Mary
