Hello all, after lengthy discussions my wife and I have ventured in being chicken owners. I built a hutch out of a 42x48 pallet last weekend, and we bought 8 Rhode Island pullets this weekend just a few weeks old. The chicken run is going to be a 10x10x6 dog lot. Both my wife and I have done tons of research so hopefully we will do good, but will still ask questions in the forum.

Hi and welcome to our community.

Rule of thumb, allow 4-5 sq. feet per bird in the coop, excluding roosts & nest boxes and 10 sq.feet per bird in the outdoor dog. A run cover can provide shade, some protection from the elements and keep fliers inside, and jumpers,, climbers and raptors from getting inside.
