Hello,
I am just beginning this wonderful new adventure of raising chickens and am looking forward to learning much from this site. 6 of my peeps (red rangers)are just over a week old and my other three (2 lavender and one black Orpington) are a couple days younger. I have been searching for a coop. I found someone on craigslist who builds beautiful coops, but my husband is of the opinion that the cost is too much. It is a very well built shaker style 4x5 and the interior height is about 5'6" at the peak. The legs of the coop are 4x4 posts and the coop is elevated, I guess less than a foot high off the ground. I have zero skills at building and my husband, while very capable, is on a PICC line and cannot build me one.
 
Hi and welcome to BYC - glad that you have joined us. Sadly, its seems that the majority of pre-fab coops are more biased towards "eye-candy" for purchasers, rather than chickens. A garden shed design works very well, and is likely to be cheaper and will provide more flexibility as your flock grows (which it inevitable will

Coops can be built fairly inexpensively out of a variety of re-used materials. Pallets are usually free and can be used. Some people have re-purposed plastic children's playhouses. Places like Habitat for Humanity can be a good source for materials. The main thing is that the birds are safe from flying and digging predators and that they have ample room inside the coop.
