I have 8 chicks, 6 weeks old, 4 different breeds. This GLW stands out as the smallest by far but not lightweight...rather surprisingly heavy actually. Feathering in so differently from the other GLW. Was lagging behind, now with feathers coming in everywhere it seems. Has lost almost all downy feathers though. Will stand toe to toe or bump chests with any of them including the alpha buff orp who is easily twice her (his?) size (same age). Am I wrong in thinking I have a roo? Not much happening on the head but I saw wattles starting today. Rose comb still pretty flat and pale. Almost no tail yet.

X2, I think they are pretty fiesty birds. My SLW pullet was constantly sparring and had what I thought was a fairely pink comb at 5 weeks. I asked about her on this thread a couple of times. She has now laid her 6th egg. Comparing her to obvious SLW cockerals there was a world of difference.

Oh good. Thank you both for the reassurance! I appreciate the time and info. I know it's too early to know what sex but I was already starting to call her a him in my head so I was hoping to change that. :) thanks!

I think what throws me is the lack of a tail. I always felt like this chick was a week younger than the other who has a tail and lots more feathers.

Feather growth is irrelevant to sexing unless you can be absolutely certain the chick is the offspring of a fast feathering cock over a slow feathering hen. Even then, it's only accurate at about one day of age. I've seen a group of ten different pullet chicks of the same breed hatched on the same day exhibit ten different patterns of feather growth.
