Chicken Run questions

Hi Everyone,

I'm new here and to chickens. I purchased 4 hens last week and I'm working on plans for a run. We've already purchased a coop. I understand, after reading posts here, that we need to use hardware cloth at least on the bottom few feet to keep out predators. I have a couple questions regarding the rest.

Would I be able to attach fencing to the bottom of the run (like the floor) instead of digging a trench and burying the coop? There's a possibility it may be moved in the future and our backyard is VERY hard ground and it would be very difficult to dig a 1-2 ft trench around the coop.

Would I be able to use chicken wire for the top of the run to save money? I currently have a 4ft livestock fence around my entire yard. We have raccoons, skunks and cats in the area. There are very few fox and coyotes around my parts.

Last question, if I were to make the run 4ft tall, how would we clean it?

Welcome to BYC!!! There is no need to dig a trench. You can just lay the wire on top of the ground and pin it down. The digging predators will hit the wire and give up.

I'm just beginning our run and I'll be using a layer of chicken wire followed by a layer of 2x4 welded wire on the sides and the top of the run. Doing the entire thing in hardware cloth is the optimum protection but I feel like the 2 layers will provide a level of protection that I'm comfortable with. I would not trust just the chicken wire by itself.

A 4' tall run will be a giant pain for you to maintain. I would never consider a run that I could not stand up in. Crawling through chicken poop inside the run is not something that I would want to do to clean it or to tend to any problems.
