Egg yolk sac?

A friend of mine ordered chicks from a hatchery and mistook an attached egg yolk sac for pasty butt. She didn't realize until after soaking her. She said she hasn't found much info about other than the chick has a 25% survival rate...she really wants it to make it. If anyone can help it would be appreciated

I actually did the same thing once, my chick didn't make it sadly. I'm not sure what you could do to help it but I hope the little one does ok!

Oh, dear. I had one that hatched with the yolk sac unabsorbed, and the poor thing died. It didn't look like that, though; how do you know that it's a yolk sac and not a pasted vent?

This is her 2nd batch of hatchlings she has raised, she went through a few pasty butt issues last time. She originally thought this WAS the same, tried soaking it, then realized it wasn't the same, or same area, She said this was attached to the umbilical area. The chick passed last night

Oh, that's terrible! That's what's kept me from putting eggs in the bator for a while- I just hate to see them have problems and not make it.

She said the closest answer she got was either assisted hatching, or too hot incubator to cause them to develop and hatch faster. The store sent her 6 chicks vs 5 so I think they knew this one might not make it

Yes, it was probably a too hot incubator. I guess I can see how it might happen with an assisted hatch, but that seems unlikely. With mine the problem was the thermometer was off and we didn't know until about the time they started hatching. I think I tested the thermometer beforehand, but maybe I forgot or maybe whatever I tested it with was wrong, too. Lesson learned there.
