Well I'm a bit scared this morning..... And I guess I need support and tips. I can't believe what is happening...
Here's the story....
First--- we just recently moved into this house.
My poultry has been in a closed off BEAUTIFUL tack room for about 2-3 weeks now. Before putting them in this room, I obviously went through the corner check--- made sure everything was okay. The tack room is empty-- no tack, no bags of seed, nothing. Its a wooden floor and it's CLEAN. There is one thing-- a bottle of Aqua stuff, its a blue coloring agent for the pond. I make sure to move that up to about 6-7 feet high on a rack where no one can get to it. There is some dried blue stuff on the wall, but it's been there for years, and has since soaked into the wood. I figure it's okay, safe for the pond--- safe for the poultry...
They were in there for 2 weeks and everything was going great.
Then four days ago we found a duck in a corner--- dead. There had seemed to be, in quite an obvious corner--- green and white stuff. Probably the big RP---terrible, nasty, rat poison. I quickly moved the rest of the flock into a safe stable until we could clean the room--- disposed properly of the duck, in a bag, in the garbage. We scoured the room from tip to toe-- feeling GUILTY.... What had we done? Had we really missed something like that? Anyway--- the rest of the flock was fine---- Albeit, covered in blue stuff? We figured that maybe the room had become wet and maybe some of the pond stuff had come up..... But it was amazing how much of it! There wasn't even that much. The bottle hadn't been tampered with either--- no signs of them climbing up to get it. Nothing.
Well it's been 4 days and everything has been okay since-- no more casualties.
Then this morning I went in to feed them and there was blue all in their mouths--- and a green powdery substance near the door in the hay. EVERYWHERE. This was OBVIOUS amounts of green stuff. Stuff I definitely would have seen. The flock---for now, seems okay and in pretty good spirits.
But I'm scared---- is somebody coming and poisoning my animals? Or is it that rodents moving around in the night could be carrying it in? Is it something in the hay? What's going on?
How long does it take for young birds to be affected by rat poison? When will I know?
Maybe they licked the walls? (But seriously, the color in my aqua stuff is different than the color I found laying around. And there isn't that much of it.... if there was, I would have never stuck them in what seemed to be a very safe room.)
I'm moving them into a horse stable now. I don't know what else to do. This means less shelter and protection for them though. I'm just... so torn and so worried. Buying new locks for the barn.... We are going to check the rafters tonight to see if rats are knocking the poison down from a place we can't see (even though the tack room has a good ceiling).
