Can I put in a concrete floor?

Hi All!!

When we bought our house it came with a coop and run! However there is no floor just dirt. I plan on using sand in my coop instead of straw. Can you think of any reason why I should not put in a concrete floor? I figured it would be easier to clean out and would keep a predator from digging its way in.

Thank you!!!

Hi welcome-byc.gif

I see no reason why you can't concrete the run. I have mine on concrete and slabs and it works well for me. I sweep and power wash the runs out to keep them clean. Predators can't dig in and in general it looks tidier. I would suggest you put them a dust bath in so they can do the usual chicken things. I use a wooden box with soil, play sand and DE earth in.

My coop and run are built on an old workshop foundation with a broken concrete floor, and it works fine.  Why sand?  On concrete?  If you have very few birds, and like to 'scoop poop' daily, it may be fine.  Deep litter with shavings is SO much easier!  Mary
