What's is the fest breed of duck to get as a pet? I want something calm that my kids and I can enjoy.. I have 3 right now.. Two Pekins & im not 100% sure what my other on is.

How calm they are depends on how much time you spend socializing with them. Pekins are a good start if you want a calmer bird to start with. But they can be flighty and nervous too if you don't commit time to them. Any duck can be calmer given enough socialization. I know @Amiga has managed to tame the supposedly flighty runner ducks, and @Tevyes Dad has all types of ducks that are very calm and that let him pick them up. It takes TONS of time to earn their trust to the point where they are calm around you. And tons of treats too, lol.

Working full time, I've never had enough time to spend with my ducks to get them to be calm. But I'm working on earning their trust. Honestly, what's worked best for me was getting chickens. They are less scared and eat readily from my hand with hardly any socialization as chicks. When the ducks see the chickens eating from my hand, it gives them the confidence to come up to me. I still can't pick them up without a fuss, but it's really helped. But I'm not saying go adopt a dozen chickens like I did, lol. That's just what worked for me. Time and treats are really your best bet.

Agreed - time, treats.

And ducks learn from watching others. My adopted trio was quite nervous at first. But they watched me not harm the other ducks, and now are almost friendly. They are certainly cooperative.

We have adopted Buffs, a white Mallard, Rouen-Khaki mix, and BEI. Aside from the shy Buff trio, every one of them is a sweetheart - friendly, and the Rouen-Khaki likes a few pets.

Thanks so much guys for the info. I have two females & a male... My male is my calmest.. My females are crazy lol. Sometimes they are loving and other times they hate me.

Off the subject, but you have a white mallard? How cool! Is it like an albino fluke or something?
