what do you use to keep out bugs ?

I see. Really the best way to prevent lice and mites is to allow your birds to take dust baths. If the have access to dirt they will create one of their own. If they do not you need to give them an area, I usually use an old washtub and put dry dirt, sand, and I have heard wood ash is excellent, in it. They will do a very good job of keeping themselves clean.
During the winter, because mine spend so much time locked in a barn, I put down DE on the floor. I then cover that with straw.

Normal dust bathing activities by the flock will keep pests at bay and maintain the flock in a healthy condition. Just make sure that the flock has a place where they can dust bath...

Build it and they will come.

Now if you notice an infestation in the flock, then you will need to take some further steps. You'll want to add Diatomacious Earth to the location where the flock normally dust bathes.

You might also think about replacing the litter in the coop, and sealing any cracks and crevices where the pests can seek shelter. Mites are great at hiding in cracks near the roost and coming out after dark to feed on the roosting birds.
