(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I am a brand-spankin' new keeper of chickens. I purchased 4 right off the bat, thinking that as a new chicken owner I should consider a mortality rate.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
So far so good, I still have four.
We have nicknamed them, the "Golden Girls." I got them at 2 days old (around Valentine's Day, 2016). They are just over 3 mos. old as of this posting.
(3) What breeds do you have?
1 Buff Orpington, and 3 Gold Sex Links
(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
Stumbled upon the site in my inet searches for good chicken advice from experienced chicken owners.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Gardening, composting, sailing and competitive artistic roller skating.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
My husband and I have no other pets besides the wild cats, foxes, raccoons, and various wild life that happen to wander through our backyard from time to time. I am a recently retired admin from a private university; and often wonder how I ever had the time to work.
Raising chickens brings me a lot of joy. Yes, chickens can be a lot of work too; but since I am retired, it keeps me pleasantly busy in a good way. I never realized having chickens could be so much fun. I had tried totally free-ranging my chics with full backyard access...until they were finding and able to jump up on the picnic tables and leave a mine field. Not to mention the hubby likes to keep weeds abay by sprying them
; but alas I conceded, and sequestered the girls. We have since enlarged their run are (to include my garden...which is dwindling quickly as they grow larger
); but now life is tolerable for all concerned.
I have also sequestered the large tomato plant within the garden to avoid their eventual disappearance, as which happened with the smaller heirloom tomatoes available at their descretion. I do like that they have access to vegetation.
Thank you for all the invaluable information I have acquired thus far.
