So I'm about to get some more hens and I put an ad up on craigslist and a lady near me who doesn't know much about chicken breeds said that she has "reds" available and that she got them from tractor supply. She asked the person working there if they were rhode island reds and they did not know. She did mention that the birds are two months old and have a "lighter red" color, not quite like the dark rusty red color of RIR's. I'm wondering if these chicks might be red stars, or are they really RIR's? I haven't seen them yet. I'm just going off of what I know. Does tractor supply sell both RIR and Red Stars? Please help.

Red sexlink lay best due to there hybrid vigor.
Hatchery rir lay great too.. I don't think you could go wrong with either..
Far as temperament most hens are easy going..
Roosters can be mean or nice. .I think there's good and bad roosters in all breeds.
If you end up with red roosters from that group. .likely they are rir.
Since red sexlink roosters are white with some red leakage

I'm having trouble understanding the above, could you break that down for me once more? How could a red star rooster be a rhode island red rooster? And what about their colors?

Red sexlinks are a cross with a red rooster over silver based hens. Pullets come out redish . Males come out yellow.grow up mostly white.. they do that so the can sex them at hatch easy... rir are purebred so both sexes are red
