My cot chicks should be ready to pick up next week as 2 day olds from a local breeder. I am hoping to start with 8 hens for two breeding groups. I think I have myself convinced that 18 is the magic number to likely get me there.

What ratios have you started with and how lucky/successful/unlucky was your choice? I read of one unlucky guy who hatched 19 males /w 0 males.

So how have your numbers gamble paid off?
 
Statistically you should get twice as many as you want. Anything other than a 50/50 split between males and females is going to be pure randomness and "luck". Unless someone can show a stat where there is a general trend where there are more females (or more males) hatched in general.
 
I totally agree! I hatched out my first batch a month ago and very few are females. Maybe 5 out of 20. Have you ever thought of buying a breeding pair or group?
 
We have incubated over 500 eggs(A-M,Brown,Tuxedo) this last 10 months and no matter what the hatch ratio is ,the Roo/Hen ratio is almost always 50/50.
 
Six of eight pharaohs turned out female, need to wait on the nine A&Ms. I'm hoping on three breeding groups.
 
To close this out, 5 pharaoh out of 8 and 5 A&M out of 9 turned out to be female. So 10 females out of 17, I can't complain.
 
My hens started laying by 5 1/2 weeks. At 7 weeks I found an egg in the male cage. Butters is a girl! My late blooming A&M (in hindsight) was the cause of the male agression i had. Now I have 11 girls and 3 boys in an 8'x8' section of my aviary with 3 males caged and waiting on freezer camp.
 
Hatches are, statistically speaking, going to be 50/50. But you're talking about picking a random group of birds from a hatch. There's really no way to tell what you'll get. When I picked up my first chicks I got 20. That wasn't all the ones that hatched. I ended up with 7 females.
