I bought straw for the duck house (not the run). I was going to mix straw and wood shavings together. Someone informed me that is not safe for the ducks as they will peck at the straw and can ingest the wood chips?

wood chips or shavings?

I use pine shavings in the house and straw in the run with no noticeable ill effect. YMMV.

Be cautious with either + ducklings. They are more likely to eat the bedding.

White wood shavings (dust extracted, not sawdust) is one of the most popular and safest bedding materials for ducks. They are cheap, absorbent, and easy to use. The shavings keep smells down and reduce ammonia in the air from droppings that can cause respiratory damage and eye problems. Keep in mind that they may mistake this as food so be careful when choosing a food supplier. Good luck!
