We have 11 Barred Plymouth Rocks and we can tell which are the pullets and which are the cockerels. We think! What we don't know is what we have in the picture. This little guy/gal was much lighter since we got her (I'm hoping it's Macy Gray rather than Gandolph the Gray!) and much bigger. Has continued to be much bigger than it's flock mates and isn't getting the typical barred markings. We got all the chicks from the University of Alberta's chicken program and we've looked at the other heritage breeds they are raising/selling and don't see any like Macy Gray. Could it be that we have an albino Barred Rock? This doesn't explain the discrepancy in the size differences though. Any ideas?

Definitely not an albino. Those are solid white with red eyes. The bird in question seems to be blue. Do they have any meat bird projects?

Agree it is not gray, it is blue. I hope it isn't a meat bird, so you can grow it out and sees what color it ends up.

I agree she isn't ugly either but I hadn't thought of the 'blue'. Excited to see what she will be (and hoping it's a she!) She is very protective of the little females and they hide under her when the little males are struttin' their stuff. The U of A also raises Light Sussexes, New Hampshires, White Leghorns, and Brown Leghorns along with the BPRs. Here is a link to their page: https://www.heritagechickens.ca/#home

How old are they? S/he doesn't match any of the breeds they list on their site. You may want to contact them to see what your surprise bird is.

I heard back from the UofA today about my mystery bird. This is what they said, "The lighter one that is much bigger than the others could be a random bred and not a barred Plymouth rock. The random needs grow faster and bigger than the barred Plymouth rocks because they were what were used for meat birds in 1978. They will still lay eggs and are fertile." So she's sweet natured like a BPR but bigger and lighter coloured. She's our special delivery!
