I bought 8 Standard Bronze Breasted Turkeys 6 (Going on seven weeks) weeks ago. Two weeks ago I started to let them outside to scratch around during the day and by night put them back in the brooder , I found out recently some people keep their poults in the brooder for 8 - 10 weeks and then another 8 weeks above ground in a wired pen for another eight weeks above ground preventing any illness and just wondering are turkey chicks immune system really that weak.? Before mention I don't keep them outside twenty four hours and they are not showing any signs of being sickly. Just wondering first time turkey owner.

Turkeys tend to be much more susceptible than chickens to respiratory illnesses/issues... as well as cocci... and not to mention the possibility of blackhead that can be carried/spread by chickens...

But... each does things differently than others... if you aren't having issues, then I wouldn't worry... :)

Mine turned three weeks old yesterday and I have been taking them outside since about day 10. I do supplement with an electrolyte, probiotic, and vitamin mix in the water. They do go over areas that my chickens have been in, and have had some light interaction with some of the chickens and guineas. Blackhead does not appear to be an issue in my area. They enjoy the exercise and break from boredom, and I feel better letting them get fresh air, vegetation, and bugs. I am still babying them by having them sleep inside in the dog crate instead of moving them out to the outdoor brooder like I planned.
