I am a first time chicken owner. I have this lovely 7 week old EE that was bought as a sexed pullet but we all know that's no guarantee. I'm thinking I might have a little roo on my hands. I've read all about the different ways to tell the difference between sexes but I need some expert eyes to help me out. Personality wise, this one has been the most skittish from the beginning but is a little braver now. For reference, this chick is a week older than the ones in the background.

Here are some body shots.

Strange tail feathers...

Comb is a little pinkish on the top

Thanks so much for your help!

It looks like a hen but its color looks like a rooster! I think its probably a hen. Roosters tails stick up more. Let me know what it turns out to be! :)

Looks to be a pullet to me. At 7 weeks and that pale of a comb, bout got to me a pullet.

Thank you for sharing your input. The color is one of the reasons I think it might be a roo. Then again, it's body looks roundish to me and it's feathers came in very evenly and I know those are pullet traits. Also, it used to carry it's tail upright a lot but now it carries it down most of the time. I know a roo's tail should be pointy but this one has those weird little feathers at the the tips so I have no idea what's going on there. Then there is the comb. I read that, with pea combs, roos have three distinct rows which this chick has had since it was a week old. Then I read that females can have three rows but only the middle will grow bigger. On mine, over the past week it looks like the middle has gotten bigger but the sides didn't. Then there is the color of the comb. A week ago it started to get a little pink but it hasn't changed at all since then. In other words this bird has thrown me for a loop.

I think this in going to be a wait a see kind of deal. I will defiantly post updated pictures. I think I'll wait till 10 weeks, since that's when the hackle and saddle feathers are supposed to start showing. Since you both say pullet I'll hope a little bit longer.

This is my elderly EE Margaret. She doesn't look very good because she is molting. She used to look alot like yours! :)

I'm going to keep updating this thread. I know how helpful it can be when people are looking through old threads to see progress shots. Here is my little EE at 9 weeks.

What do you all think? Still looking like a pullet?
