Khaki Campbell raise their young?

I have two KC hens sitting on a large nest of eggs. Today I let the ducks and chicks out. The duck hens always come out with a ruckus. They run to get feed. Then to the water to drink and then to bathe. I looked into their box while they were on their mission and found a hollow egg shell. First I thought maybe it was an egg that never developed. Looking at it farther, it looked more like one had actually hatched, but I didn't see it anywhere. I thought maybe they had eaten it or something. Finally I walked into the chicken coop (the duck box and coop are connected) and found it laying in the coop. This would have been a long journey for a newly hatched duckling. It was already fluffed out, but very weak. No signs of damage. I picked it up and it actually chirped and came to life. It looked and acted pretty normal. I wonder if it made that journey on its own or if maybe the mother duck packed it out there and dropped it.

Will they raise their young like a chicken will or am I better off separating them? I put this one in a brooder with 6 RIR pullets and 6 Buff pullets. I did put a divider between them and put a small bowl of water filled with rocks and a little food.

Curious with the same question as I have ducklings due to hatch any day now.

I have Khakis. First hatch was from the only hen I had. She successfully hatched 14 ducklings. She was with one drake and they were in their own pen. They stayed together until adults.
Second hatch was last weekend. 5 females contributed to this nest. I did not plan on letting it happen, so we were taking the eggs as they layed them. But, they got smart and buried a nest. One duck stayed on the nest and hatched 7. But, because she's in a pen with 5 hens and 2 drake's, I separated her and the ducklings. She keeps them warm at night and eats the starter feed with them.
If I let her with the rest, the babies will try to keep up with her and likely be trampled.
This weekend I'll be putting them in a brooder and let her go back with the adults. She'e a super mom, but she wants out.
I'm thinking your mama duck just wanted to eat and the duckling tried to keep up with her.
Did yours go back and sit on the nests?

Yes, they always go back and sit on the eggs. When I got home, 1 more had hatched and was dead about a foot away from the nest. The hens were sitting side by side on the nest. I could hear chirping, but couldn't tell if it was coming from the hens or another duckling. They finally moved off and one was hatching. I stayed until it was completely out and removed it from the nest to put with the first one. It has since dried off and puffed up. Still very sleepy though. I checked on them again before locking everyone in for the night. One egg was squashed. No movement and it was underdeveloped. I am wondering if the drake is after them. He is pretty aggressive toward the chickens and was toward another drake I had. He would run my rooster off that was 3 times his size.

As of now, I have 2 ducklings and the hens are sitting on 10 eggs. We will see how it looks come morning. The hens are determined.

I thought I had the ducklings separated from my pullets. The ducklings busted out and got with them. The pullets started pecking at them, so I built a better separater.

Is there a way to separate the rest from the two sitting? That would also stop others from trying to invade the nests.

I guess I could make an automatic door and make the hens wear key fobs. ;-)

Actually I didn't think this far ahead when I added the duck box to the coop. Hindsight....

One more hatched and dead in the duck box this morning. This time it was in with the rest of the eggs. At this point I would take all of them out of the nest and put them in an incubator if I had one. Just to rule out the hens or the drake.

Came home to 3 pipped eggs. I don't think the hens were getting wet enough while out. The egg shells were so hard they were having a lot of trouble with them. I carefully made a few cracks by peeling the shell only. Not long after they popped out on their own looking healthy.

Good news... I am still awaiting my first duckling to start hatching. Tomorrow is 28 days since momma started sitting. Just finished re-arranging the duck pen to separate the drake & other female, momma duck & my other younger ducks.
