I've a broody hen sitting on about 15 eggs in the coop. When the eggs begin to hatch, what will I need to do to ensure the chicks survival? (Never, have I raised chicks in any way, shape, or, form ). Please understand that you are explaining things to a "newbee".
 
The mom will do it all just make sure the chicks cant fall out of the nest. Chicks don't have to have food or water for the first 3 days but I like to put food and water in with them. And just watch and make sure the other chickens don't kill them most of the time mom will keep them safe but some times it happens. Good luck!
 
Thank you. Now then, the eggs and broody hen are in on of six nest boxes which was built at floor level. Therefore, the peeps can't "fall" out of the nest per se. They could, however, walk over to the door and fall from the ramp that goes to the ground. (Need I do something about this? Secondly, what kind of food do you suggest for the new peeps?
 
Now I've another situation. My hen rolled five of the fifteen eggs that she was sitting on, out of the nest and onto the coop floor. Why did she roll them onto the floor? Should I be doing something?
 
Put the eggs back under her if they aren't broken.You may want to candle the egg to May sure the chicks are alive. How long has she been sitting? I have moved hens with eggs if I was worried about them fall out. For food they need chick starter
 
The eggs were not broken. I've put them back under her. Broody has been sitting on her eggs for four days. I'll search the BYC site to learn how to "candle" eggs. I've no idea of where "candling" will lead me, or, what may happen. Like I've said.......I'm a Newbie regarding peeps.
 
Ok 4 days you wouldn't see much if you candle them. Are you sure she is broody is she sitting on the eggs day and nite? Only asking because you said you was new to peeps
 
If they have 4 full days of incubation and are fertile, providing they are not dark shelled, you should be able to tell if there is development. Candling should be done from the top (bigger rounded end) down into the egg. I use a flashlight and cup my hand around the flashlight and egg so the light goes down into the egg through the air cell.
