Hello all you veteran chick raisers! This is my first broody-Hatched batch of chicks, scheduled to hatch in a few days I'm wondering if I should be planning to vaccinate the chicks and/or give them medicated feed or not? Or, do they develop immunity etc. Via momma? I've only ever had full grown birds and chicks that came from the hatchery and I raised them under a heat lamp. Not sure how much/little to "interfere" or just let nature do its thing. Any thoughts here? Thanks!! :)

I don't do Marek's vaccinations on my home bred chicks, but do for hatchery chicks. So far there's no Marek's disease here, and my home breds are the 'canaries in the coal mine' who would get sick first. Amprolium medicated chick starter is good insurance against a bad coccidiosis outbreak, so it's never a bad idea. I feed everyone Flock Raiser, with oyster shell on the side for the layers, and haven't had issues. BUT someday I might not be so lucky! I have high dry sandy soil, which likely helps too. Mary
