Chick Coccidiosis Help!

Hello everyone!

I brought home four baby chicks yesterday and my two week old Wyandotte had bloody poop as soon as we got her home. My other three are fine so far, they are only days old so they were in a brooder and she was in the big barn with older chicks. She's been puffy with her little tail down, still eating and drinking but lethargic. Farm supply said it's probably coccidiosis so I've added 1/2 tsp Corid to their quart water, the are also on medicated feed. Does anyone know how long it'll take before she's better? Should I be bracing myself for the worst? Anything else I can do to help her? Thank you!!
 
Just make sure that she is drinking enough of the medicated water. Usually most people see improvement in a day or two. Make sure all chicks are getting the medicated water, and change it daily. Keep the brooder clean and dry. Stir the bedding daily, and add fresh if needed. Make sure the water does not become contaminated with poop and shavings. It may need to be elevated with a 1 inch board to keep poop out of it. Good luck. Here is a good link to read:

She isn't eating or drinking much at all...just sleeping or sitting under the lamp

I just lost a chick to coccidiosis. Its hard because they don't show any signs of it until it is almost too late. This was my first time dealing with cocci, so I am by far no expert. But I would start hand feeding her with a syringe. Then when you put her back, dunk her beak in the water so she knows it is there. The problem is Corid makes the water taste funky. My chick was so weak before she died, she had to be hand fed. I kept feeding her medicine but she never seemed to recover. She just started flipping out this morning and thrashing around, then went silent and died. It was awful. I don't want to see the same happen to yours. Good luck, and I hope she gets better!

Feed it to her with a dropper, or by dipping her beak into the water. You can also mix 2 tsp of Corid into 2 tsp of water, and feed her a couple of drops twice a day of the concentrated mixture.
 
I'm so sorry about your chick! That must have been horrible! This is my second group of chicks, I have 3 two year old hens and I've never dealt with cocci before this either. What symptoms did your chick have? How many days did you treat her before you lost her? I wonder if there is anything I can add to the water to help with the flavor? She is drinking when I put her next to the water and dip her beak in...I've only had her 24hrs and I'm going to be so bummed if I loose her! Besides doing the corid in a syringe do I just mix their feed with water and feed her that in a syringe also? Thanks so much for the info!

Thank you, it was very upseting to lose her in such a way. I found my chick on Thursday night, and isolated her from the rest. She wasn't eating or drinking or even moving. Her feathers were all pulled away from her body. I had been syringe feeding her medicine since Friday. She was eating and drinking by herself by Sunday, so I put her back in the brooder with the others. Then, she took a turn for the worse. Monday night I had to take her back out. She was barely moving, and wouldn't eat or drink. I tried feeding her some more medicine by the syringe, but she wouldn't drink it. She died Tuesday morning. I think my biggest mistake was putting her back in the brooder when she wasn't fully healed. I don't know why I did it, I just thought she was all better and would be happier with her friends. Looking back, I should've kept her isolated and drinking medication. I guess the other chicks were too much energy for her and she just stopped eating or drinking.

Edit: I read somewhere that feeding raw egg yolk would give the chick some extra energy, I don't know if this is true, but it would make sense because the yolk is high in protein and what the embryo uses for food while still in the egg. I tried this with my chick, but she was so weak she couldn't even swallow and it dropped out of her beak.

Terrible! It sounds like you did everything you could though! how old was she? I was told not to separate my chick from the others because being alone can be a stress as well so your instinct to put yours back with her buddies was good! I doubt that's what made her turn, you are right if it's too late there's not much that can help. Yesterday when I got my chicks she was eating a ton and drinking, but her tail was down and feathers a little fluffed...as the day went on she just had less and less energy plus the bloody poop. I hope I caught it soon enough! I will give the egg yolk a try, thank you
 
I mixed a little hard boiled egg yolk with the medicated water and hand fed it to her...she ate more than I thought she would! I also dipped her beak in the water and she drank a few times. I'll go get a syringe from farm supply in the morning, and I'll try the egg yolk again before I go to bed. Hopefully she's better in the morning
