Strange new roosting behavior question...

Unless you actually see mites, I would guess that Shezadandy has come up with the most likely probable cause of the change in roosting behavior - it's just cooler outside.

X2

Pictures of your coop/run may be helpful as well. How much ventilation/windows do you have?
Is there a way to place a fan that blows air through the coop for better air circulation?

I have one in my coop window, and it is usually 5-7degrees cooler than the outside temps during the day and anywhere from 10-12 cooler at night. I do set it to go off if it goes below 55. But we do have large temp variations, so it can be mid 90s during the day and drop to low 60s even 50s overnight.

Shezadandy,

You may be right about the heat. It's been oppressively hot here for several weeks, not to mention we are in a severe drought where I am. I'm going to try a fan to move some air through the coop. They tried to roost on top of the coop again last night. The concern is not so much that they want to stay outside, but that with the automatic door, when it closes for the night, it's not going to open again until daybreak. If there were to be a pop up thunderstorm during the night they would be SOL. lol
I'm still looking for the garlic juice and essential oil to make the homemade concoction for killing mites, so until i get that I'll just have to "wing" it. hahaha

heahahahah "wing it" -- love it. Maybe costco? It's amazing what can be found in their spice aisle- maybe a mondo minced garlic packed in that intensely flavored garlic liquid would do the trick.

I feel for ya- we've been lucky to suffer in only week long increments in the NW - the fan at night in the coop made a big difference. Windows are marvelous but if the outside air isn't moving, all the windows in the world won't help cool them off.
