Southern New Mexico
Hi

I live in southern New Mexico, we've had chickens about 2 years now, give or take a month. 4 Rhode Island Reds, 3 Leghorns, 1 Partridge Rock, 1 Asian Black, 3 Black Sex Link, 4 Barred Rocks, 5 Red sex link, 1 New Hampshire Red, and 2 newly hatched chicks, one we think is Rhode Island red and the other is 1/2 Rhode Island red and 1/2 Leghorn. Our only rooster at the moment is a Rhode Island. We also have 2 Swedish Blue ducks. Free range back yard chickens all of them. They vary in ages of 2 years to 3 weeks right now

The Partridge and 2 Gold red sex links seems like they want to brood, and we are encouraging that, because using the incubator sucks. This past go however we had 18 eggs, 5 had chicks, only 2 survived, it was kind of sad, and we are sure the rooster is all kinds of stupid.

We did really bad for first time chicken parents, started with 26 of mixed, only 7 survived (we ate 4). The learning curve to teach our dogs not to kill them was hard won. This most resent time we got 14 and 9 survived, apparently an owl found a hole in our coop roof.

We've managed to hatch 4 chicks from our incubator and 1 with a hen, the first one drowned because we'd left open water out for the ducks, the second two were killed by the older hens, so our current babies are in a special pen with an open yard for them to be around the older chicks but not within killing range. The proximity seems to make our hens want to brood more, which works for me.

We have 4 dogs, 2 are border collie/blue heeler pups, 1 is a grate dane mix and the other is....some kind of shepherd mutt. We also have 5 cats, but the cats could care less about the chickens, especially since the chickens chase them. We also have 1 toddler and 1 on the way. So it's a busy house.

Looking for information on our birds, and general conversation about them.Every 2 years we are planning on adding a couple new birds to the flock for diversity, we love the variety of colors. Thank you for your time. See you around.

Welcome to BYC! Sorry about your hatch, but it sounds like you have a nice setup for them now. If you ever have any questions, always feel free to ask. Thanks for joining us!

Here here....down in the south central mountains of New Mexico! Hello neighbor!!

Are you getting any monsoons yet down there? We have been getting spit on this past week. Definitely cooled us down but we could use a lot more.

Sounds like you have learned quite a bit through "trial by fire", it's all a learning curve as we go! When I started I wished these birds came with a manual. Ha! But the flocks teach us to pay attention and be better stewards to our birds.

Well it's great to have a fellow New Mexican on board! There are a few of us here on BYC. We do have a state thread for NM you can stop by and chat with your chicken neighbors.... https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/18195/new-mexico

Make yourself at home here and ask any questions you may have.

Welcome to our flock! :)

Nice to meet you! Glad there are some other New Mexico peeps here lol. The weather is just starting to monsoon us, which the ducks and the toddler love the chickens no so much. The trial by fire sucked hard core cause we still had stars in our eyes about having chickens, the reality bit hard, but now our dogs are terrified of the chickens. The baby chick coop used to be a dog house, but the dogs never used it soooooo bird netting, door, heater lamp and so forth. Hope to get some good pics of our chicks, especiall Freckles our 1/2 Rhodie 1/2 leghorn, he/she is covered in little black freckles

I can relate...my flock had MS at a very young age and wow, I balled eyes out wondering why I ever got involved in chickens?! LOL But every downfall was a learning experience. Learning comes through lots of awful. LOL I wouldn't go back and change a thing.

Good to hear you are getting some monsoonal flow! It seems to have dried up on us yesterday and today. Tomorrow they are talking 80% chance of rain, so keeping my fingers and toes crossed!!

Enjoy!! :)
