I live in southern New Mexico, we've had chickens about 2 years now, give or take a month. 4 Rhode Island Reds, 3 Leghorns, 1 Partridge Rock, 1 Asian Black, 3 Black Sex Link, 4 Barred Rocks, 5 Red sex link, 1 New Hampshire Red, and 2 newly hatched chicks, one we think is Rhode Island red and the other is 1/2 Rhode Island red and 1/2 Leghorn. Our only rooster at the moment is a Rhode Island. We also have 2 Swedish Blue ducks. Free range back yard chickens all of them. They vary in ages of 2 years to 3 weeks right now
The Partridge and 2 Gold red sex links seems like they want to brood, and we are encouraging that, because using the incubator sucks. This past go however we had 18 eggs, 5 had chicks, only 2 survived, it was kind of sad, and we are sure the rooster is all kinds of stupid.
We did really bad for first time chicken parents, started with 26 of mixed, only 7 survived (we ate 4). The learning curve to teach our dogs not to kill them was hard won. This most resent time we got 14 and 9 survived, apparently an owl found a hole in our coop roof.
We've managed to hatch 4 chicks from our incubator and 1 with a hen, the first one drowned because we'd left open water out for the ducks, the second two were killed by the older hens, so our current babies are in a special pen with an open yard for them to be around the older chicks but not within killing range.The proximity seems to make our hens want to brood more, which works for me.
We have 4 dogs, 2 are border collie/blue heeler pups, 1 is a grate dane mix and the other is....some kind of shepherd mutt. We also have 5 cats, but the cats could care less about the chickens, especially since the chickens chase them. We also have 1 toddler and 1 on the way. So it's a busy house.
Looking for information on our birds, and general conversation about them.Every 2 years we are planning on adding a couple new birds to the flock for diversity, we love the variety of colors. Thank you for your time. See you around.
