Hello - I'm new to BYC - but hear great things so I'm hoping for some help here...
Our 26 week old Bantam Golden Laced Wyandotte Hen was laying eggs for about 3 weeks. We went on vacation for a week (had someone look in on her). Since we returned she hasn't laid any eggs. She would rather just stay in her cage/brooding area. If we physically pick her up to bring her outside w/ the others she is fine (active). But any chance she has- she's back into the box. Is this a characteristic of being broody? Is it considered being broody if they aren't laying on anything? If so, what is the best way to break her - separate in a wire cage as we've read? Is it normal for them to just stop laying? She was happily providing us daily but now nothing. Just hoping she's not sick? (She is eating/drinking/pooping normally to what we've seen) Please advise. FYI - she has only 1 other roommate - a Bantam Black Langshan about the same age - not laying yet however. Thank you in advance for any comments.

Welcome to BYC! It's great to have you.

She certainly sounds broody. The best method to break them in my experience has been a wire cage, with plenty of access for air drafts to chill their bellies.

Queen Misha - do I keep her in the cage all day/night (except for her "outside time"?) I'm concerned about predators. And how many days does this usually take? Will I know when her mood has changed?

Try putting her in a cage and taking her for a quick car ride.
Definitely did the trick with the broody I attempted to buy from a neighbor to sit on some eggs for me. 100% no longer broody after a short 20 min car ride. No other stresses, she didn't leave the box or meet or see any new chickens.

Now that's an interesting method. I'll have to try that soon, I have a whole coop full of birds who I really don't need brooding right now, and some free time. Hmm.
