Hey all! Seems I've got one mystery brown egg girl laying her egg in various locations in the chicken run the last 3-4 days. I feel like it's Easter! I have 24 hens total that are almost 7 months old now and 7 different breeds so really hard to tell which girl it is. Could it be that one is just starting to lay so dropping it prior to getting to the coop/nesting boxes? Or tired of waiting in line for the favorite nest? We have 12 nesting boxes but there's two that are the "favorites"...silly girls.

Thanks!

Welcome to BYC!!

There are several things that might be causing her to lay outside: 1.) Like you said, if she is a new layer, she might not be used to going to a nest to lay and is just dropping them outside. 2.) She prefers her nesting areas outside to the actual nest boxes. 3.) The other hens are bullying her when she tries to lay inside. 4.) The nest that she wants to lay in is never available since they seem to all like laying in one or two particular nest boxes.

Thanks! No random egg today, but a few extra in previously "unused" nesting boxes. I think some of the girls are figuring out why wait in line? Most of them seem to get along pretty well, the only one that seems to be a bit of an outcast is the smaller EE. I've found her a new home with some chickens more her size so maybe they'll get along better.
