I just want to share how happy I am with my range feeder.
When I used the chick feeder with the holes or a round feeder we had so much waste. The chicks would bill out the food to the point where most of it ended up on the ground. I fed homemade and now scratch and peck, so they were looking for the favorite bits in there. I looked at alternatives, but the PVC feeder didn't strike me as particularly spill resistant, plus I would have had to get lots of them for 15 chickens! So I ended up buying this one:
and am so glad I did! It is long enough so all the chickens can eat at the same time (from both sides), they can't sit on it and poop into the feed and they cannot scratch or bill any of it out! I have no more loss of feed at all, it is a breeze to fill and, since I feed scratch and peck, easy to empty. To get the chicks to eat the powdery stuff, every couple of days after I let them out in the morning and they have eaten their fill, I just take out the top bar, slide the feed to one side and pour it into a bowl, add yoghurt, milk, cottage cheese, water, whatever, stir it up well and serve from a large dog bowl. Then, once they finished their leftovers, refill the feeder. I was worried about my one pullet with pinless peepers but even she can use it without problems.
Just in case somebody else is desperate for a better feeder!
