Poncha was attacked by a coyote. She has a puncture wound on her head, side of her face and bill. We sprayed wound cote on it and have isolated her in the garage within a large crate. She is not eating and rarely drinking. What else can we do?

Coyotes!!!

She might just still be in shock. Plus, unless she is a pet that is used to being handled, she may not eat or drink in her new surroundings. Her head is up in the pic - that's a good sign. Give her a little time and she if she is perkier in the morning. Good luck and fingers crossed!

We think the initial shock is over as she is now smiling again and wagging her tail feathers. She has eaten some peas but not drinking too much. We have used a turkey baster to force some water down her throat. She has a slimy mucus coming from her mouth. We have also started a course of antibiotics. I will wash her wounds multiple times a day as well. We have also used vetericyn to clean the wounds. We hope that we got a head start on any infection so now we will just wait. She is isolated In our garage where it is warm and she has clean bedding and water.

Having a buddy with her may help too they can get depressed being alone. Be careful when forcing fluids in her mouth because they can go into her air sac and cause Pneumonia. best to just dribble along her bill or just inside the bill small amounts. Glad to hear she is doing better.

Thanks for the information, it is appreciated. So far Poncha is drinking normally again but still does not seem to have a normal appetite yet.

That could be the antibiotics they can make us feel yucky you might try making her feed soupy [just try a little first] put something in it she really likes like dried meal worms or smashed peas. etc and see if you can entice her to eat. If you can give her some company that may get her eating too. You may just have to try different things but you don't want her going too long with out eating. Tube feeding is alternate if she isn't eating soon.

She was taken to the vet today. She is very weak, unable at times to hold her head up. She was given a shot and now it's a waiting game. She also won't eat.
Hopefully this will help. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...ergency-and-supportive-care-updated-9-14-2016

Did the vet mention tube feeding her? If not I am surprised since they could have shown you how to do it.But it is also in this link I just gave you. If she hasn't eaten since the attack I'd say she needs to be tube fed and asap.

I took Poncha to a "All Creatures Vet" yesterday Sept 22nd. They gave her the following shots (Dexamethasone 2mg/Ml Inj) and (Convenia Injectable 8 Mg/Ml) This was the only place that I could find that would even look at her. The vet said that she most likely has a severe concussion and PTSD, She has eaten since the attack on Monday. She did eat some that night, some peas the next day, then she stopped eating on her own. I have been grinding up her feather fixer into a powder and mixing it with the electrolyte powder and feeding it with a turkey baster. I’m gently dribbling it into her mouth allowing her to swallow it. Poncha has only been pooping about 1-2 times a day, it has been green (don’t know if it’s from her eating peas or because of another reason) I have not seen her drink or eat on her own, She stopped egg laying, she did lay eggs Tuesday morning after the attack and Wed morning(very soft shell broke in my hands)
All she wants to do is sleep, yet she still seems to have life in her when you try to pick her up. She doesn’t go limp or anything like that. She does tend to let the head fall to the right when she is sleeping. I wonder if that is from the head trauma or the fact that the left side of her face is hurting from the laceration. Her biggest hurdles right now seem to be that she won’t eat or drink on her own. She will drink the her water if she is put in the tub, however I have not seen her drink from the plastic water container. She also is having balance issues. After I feed her or give her water, she will try to walk a little and clearly has balancing issues. I’m attaching the pics below.
