Hi, newbie duck owner here. We inherited 2 pekin ducklings, now 6-7 weeks old, and then a full grown mallard female. We currently have them in a fenced in area with a kiddie pool and a converted dog house for night time. My question is can we let them roam free to use the pond? Its too big to fence in. If we let them out will they come back at night?

Domestic ducks are at big risk on an open pond. People do it, some get away with it at least for a while.

Domestic ducks can be quite content without a pond - what they need is good food, fresh water, and safety.

I would not expect them to come back at night. And I think you mean, when the ducks are grown?

Even without a pond to tempt them, they don't return to the coop at night. You'll need to do some training to get them to do that. However, it is possible.

Just be aware that the pond will be a source of predators who come there looking for prey, including possible snapping turtles that the ducks might not see until too late.
