Does anyone have experience growing hops around chickens? Are hops toxic? safe? I want to grow them over the top of my screened in run. Don't want to chickens to get sick if they eat the buds or the vine.

I cannot attest to the toxicity of hops plants. I can tell you I have them on my property where chickens have access to them (on their free range - my vines do not cover the run or coop). Either my chickens haven't eaten them or they have and it hasn't affected them. Here's a link to an old post...very few replies to the initial question...but the third reply you will find interesting. Good luck!

I just checked out the link Redsoxs left for you, and it sounds like hops can be a good thing for them - who knew

My husband brews which is one of the reasons he wants to grow hops but they need so much room to grow I was hoping to use the coop as a way to support the vines.

Thanks for the response. I'm going to try it for the hops and shade over the run.

Welcome to BYC! It's great to have you.

I've given my birds spent hops and grains in the past, didn't seem to hurt them. I don't think the whole plant would either. I like the idea of growing vines over the run, that sounds like it will be very pretty!

Welcome to Backyard chickens! I think it sounds like a great idea! Chickens normally know if something will be toxic to them, so they will steer clear of it in most cases, but I have a friend that has a contract with a brewery to get all their spent grains for her animals, including chickens and they love it!
