4 day old chicks..a newbie - any tips appreciated

I believe that OP is stating that the snakes are a protected species in Australia. Not that they would protect her chickens! However, in that the snakes eat the rats, in a sense that is a form of protection. A snake that size could mow down a lot of chicks in a single night.
